Yesterday I got invited by a friend to go to A.C.T. In San Francisco to see the play "A Thousand Splendid Suns" based in the book of the same name by Khalid Hosseini. I was very happy to be in the City, feel the excitement from so many diverse people rushing here and there and to think about something other than Trumpian politics. The play was set in Kabul and showed the horrible suffering and violence women endure in modern Afghanistan. Yet at the heart of the play was beauty, strength and love that grew in such dire circumstances between the two abused wives and the children. At the end when one woman was about to be shot by the Taliban, she spoke in her final speech of the meaning of her life, which, she said, was worthwhile because of the love she found and was able to give and receive. It was very good to get out, get some perspective and shift my thoughts to bigger truer things than our current politics.

Facts Matter
Facts matter. I seek the truth of how things are. I've spent my life teaching clear accountable rational thinking. There is no place in my world for "alternative facts." If it's not true, it isn't acceptable. It doesn't get credit. What kind of a world do we now live in where toxic propaganda swirls around us like a chocking fog making it harder to see what is true? Intentional obfuscation abounds and half of Americans don't seem to care. Is that even true? Are they just stupid or merely duped? I know that I must keep calm and clear headed now more than ever. Emotional responses can be off. I am trying to not obsess in these trying times. Spring is still coming. Here in Berkeley the daffodils and the plum trees are blooming. Really.
